I recently had occasion to use a rot grub-like creature. Good for when you want to throw a little risk in to balance out a reward the players perceive when finding a stash of books for the taking. It didn't work for me to deter persistent book collecting. How do you handle it?

Searching for more information about the lay of the land around the bugbear crag, the party ends up ambushing a patrol, but when the ambush doesn't get surprise, the battle is far more even than intended.
